Prilosec is an oral medication that is designed to treat a chronic condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), otherwise known as acid reflux disease. Every person with GERD does not have the same symptoms, but many do notice some or even all of the following:
- Heartburn, which is a rising, burning sensation in the chest
- Sour or bitter taste resulting from backup of stomach contents into the throat
- Difficult or painful swallowing
Some people notice that their symptoms get worse after eating or when they bend over or lie down. Most people tend to blame themselves for the symptoms or they think the heartburn is a result of eating spicy foods or playing an extra round of golf. However, it's important to know that these symptoms may not be related to any action a person has taken.
GERD is a real medical problem. Although some foods or activities might make the symptoms worse, they are not the cause of the problem. Though changes to diet and activities can alleviate some of the symptoms, they are not the underlying cause of GERD.
What will attack the problem at its root - in the stomach - is a type of medication called an acid pump inhibitor. Prilosec is one medication in this class. Read more about it's effectiveness on the next page, How Does It Work ?
For some people, untreated acid reflux disease can cause complications that are even more serious, such as damage to the esophagus. As a result, it's important to make sure the right treatment is being prescribed.
