Because of its strong safety record, Prilosec has been approved for over-the-counter use in relieving heartburn. However, it's not a good idea to self-diagnose any condition. If experiencing heartburn two or more times a week, visit a doctor. This is the only way to learn if this condition may have caused existing damage in the esophagus that needs special treatment.
Prilosec Drug Interactions
Always be sure to tell a doctor or pharmacist about all of the medications currently being taken, even over-the-counter and natural/vitamin products. Medications can sometimes work against each other.
If taking any of the following medications, be sure to tell a doctor before starting to take Prilosec:
- diazepam
- warfarin
- phenytoin
- antibiotics
- antifungal agents
- iron or vitamins with iron
A doctor may need to adjust the dosages of one of more of the medications being taken. It's also important to know that antacids can be taken safely while you are on Prilosec.
