In 2003, the FDA approved the use of Prilosec as an over-the-counter medication. Who Should Take Prilosec?
- People who have been diagnosed with the condition known as GERD, or acid reflux disease
- People who have a GERD complication known as erosive esophagitis
- People who have a gastric (stomach) or duodenal (bowel) ulcer
Who Shouldn't Take Prilosec?
Women who are pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant or who are breastfeeding should talk to a doctor before starting to take Prilosec. Its safety in these situations has not been fully tested.
The safety of Prilosec in children younger than age 2 has not been studied, so children younger than that should not use this product.
People who are allergic to any of the ingredients found in Prilosec should talk with a doctor before taking this medication.
