Prilosec should be taken before eating. Try to make it a regular part of a daily routine in order to remember each dose. Do not open, chew or crush the capsules. Swallow each capsule whole.
Patients who have a hard time swallowing capsules can add the contents of a Prilosec capsule to applesauce. One tablespoon of applesauce should be placed in an empty bowl and all of the pellets inside the capsule should be carefully emptied onto the applesauce. Mix the pellets with the applesauce then eat the mixture right away. Follow with a glass of cool water to ensure complete swallowing of the pellets. The applesauce should not be hot and should be soft enough to be swallowed without chewing. The pellets should not be chewed or crushed. The pellets/applesauce mixture should not be stored for future use.
Missed Doses
If taking Prilosec on a daily basis and a dose is missed by only a few hours, take it when remembered. Don't double up on doses the next day. Taking Prilosec at a regular time of the day can help prevent missed doses.
